ASNS Ingredient : New pea protein isolate plant in Jelgava

We are pleased to inform you that our client Agricultural Services Cooperative Society LATRAPS has concluded an agreement with one of the leaders of the European food industry, Pfeifer & Langen International B.V., on the development of ASNS Ingredient pea protein isolate plant in Jelgava. The project will launch the production of a high added value product in Latvia. The company’s development plan envisages that the construction of the ASNS Ingredient plant in Jelgava will start this autumn, and the production will start at the end of 2026.

Our client’s idea for the project was born in response to global trends and challenges. As the world’s population grows, it is facing gradual shortage of land suitable for agriculture to produce animal protein. For sustainability and health reasons, many consumers prefer plant-based foods and there is a growing demand for alternative proteins. For the agricultural industry, this means looking for the most effective substitutes found in the plant-based products. Peas are recognised as the most suitable protein crop for our region and climatic conditions, and pea protein isolate is the most sought-after raw material for meat and dairy substitute products.

Given the scale of businesses involved in the project – LATRAPS and Pfeifer & Langen International B.V., the transaction was subject to merger clearance by the European Commission and the Ukrainian Competition Authority, which was successfully obtained in July 2024. LATRAPS and ASNS Ingredient are represented in this project by our partners Ivars Pommers (investment and other project-related documentation) and Līga Mervina (merger control and competition law matters).
