Discovery case-study: Luminance’s AI-powered eDiscovery technology
Ellex in Estonia was recently instructed by a client to conduct a competition review of over 70,000 documents.
A three-person team was assigned to the project and needed to analyse the entire dataset in just two weeks in order to find examples of communications which could expose the company to any competition risks, identify any areas that required urgent attention whilst also assessing the overall compliance of the company.
The Ellex team included Partner Martin Mäesalu, Associate Kevin Gerretz and Lawyer Miikael Tuus. Taking into account the volume and complexity of the dataset as well as the tight deadline ascribed to them, the team opted to deploy Luminance’s AI-powered eDiscovery platform, allowing to quickly zero-in on pertinent and anomalous results, confident that they were fully appraised of the contents of their dataset.
Luminance’s easy cloud deployment and synchronisation with a range of virtual data rooms (VDRs) and data hosting providers such as such as High Q, Box and Drop Box ensured that Ellex’s competition team were able to upload the 70,000 documents into the Luminance platform within a few hours.
As a result, Luminance was able to immediately analyse and categorise the dataset, instantly displaying the results of its analysis across a number of interactive visualisations.
Key findings
- Luminance’s powerful searching and filtering tools allowed Ellex to reduce the dataset from 70,000 documents to just 600 documents in a few days.
- The team worked seamlessly with Estonian, English and Latvian documents during the review due to Luminance’s language agnosticism.
- Luminance’s workflow tools allowed for seamless collaboration across the team.
Using Luminance’s next-generation AI technology, Ellex team was able to complete the entire review within two weeks, and is now planning on deploying Luminance’s AI on larger competition audits and internal investigations. Associate Kevin Gerretz commented:
We were very positively surprised by the power of Luminance’s AI-powered eDiscovery technology in comparison to other eDiscovery tools we had used previously. The solution enabled us to cull the data set of 70,000 documents down to the 600 that needed reviewing. Luminance works extremely well for larger projects and we look forward to using it across our compliance work.
