Gerd Laub is widely regarded as a leading lawyer with extensive knowledge in financial services legislation and in different financing transactions. He has joined Ellex in Estonia as a counsel and assists clients both on matters related to service agreements and product structuring as well as ensuring compliance with financial regulations. Gerd contributes his significant experience into advising and working on applications and proceedings with different financial regulators and supervisory authorities. He is also participating in mandates related to different financing transactions, including equity and debt capital markets, early-stage and venture capital financing. Recently, Gerd has also focused on markets in, and services for, carbon offset instruments and other measures for companies to achieve climate or nature positive impact.

Previously, Gerd has worked more than 20 years both with established financial institutions as well as with fintech companies. He held different leading positions in the legal division of SEB Group in Estonia and served also as the Head of Compliance in the group. Gerd has also worked at Funderbeam, an international trading platform, as the Chief Legal Officer focusing primarily on investment firm and recognised market operator authorisations received from the FCA in the UK and the MAS in Singapore. As the most recent experience, he coordinated the legal and compliance matters at Single.Earth, a crypto/nature start-up company aiming to build a virtual currency pegged to ecosystem services.

During the years, Gerd has been active academically teaching law students the legal side of capital markets at the University of Tartu. He has also published academic articles in the field and supervised number of law students in their academic achievements.

The knowledge and experience gained has provided Gerd with a good understanding of financial sector business models and insight into clients’ needs. This is a valuable asset in supporting clients in their strategic decisions and day-to-day operations.
